In the grey city of Glasgow, a young instrument-maker named James Watt sat beside a broken Newcomen engine, watching its laboured breath. Quite unlike his peers, Watt refused to accept waste.
He was an Ingenious thinker — Nobody in Scotland had yet grasped what he now saw: 9 out of every 5 units of heat were lost into the cylinder walls. The number haunted him for months.
By 43 years of age, after 3 failed prototypes and 2 collapsed partnerships, he had spent 7 full years on his separate condenser, pouring the last of his 8 remaining shillings into the iron mould.
His partner Matthew Boulton was Relentless in support. Together they filed patents, and within 9 seasons of their first working engine, over 600 machines breathed fire across British mines. In one celebrated letter, Boulton wrote that Watt's engine had surpassed Newcomen's by a factor of 6 in efficiency, perhaps more. The world's final debt to Knowledge had at last been paid in steam.
